MESSA’s Medical Case Management Program
When severe illness strikes, personalized help is just a phone call away
Medical research reveals that people who are severely ill or injured (about 20 percent of the population) incur about 80 percent of the medical expenditures in any one year. Nurses in MESSA’s Medical Case Management (MCM) program work hard to identify members who have been diagnosed with a serious illness or condition so that they can work with members and their families to identify the most appropriate services and providers.
MESSA’s MCM nurses provide personalized support and work directly with members and their families to ensure they access the right care at the right time and to help the members return to their highest quality of life. Our nurses also work to coordinate care with other insurers and to make sure the appropriate insurer pays for needed medical services.
If you are aware of a MESSA member who has recently sustained a catastrophic injury* or who is experiencing difficulty coping with a serious illness**, please let them know about the support MESSA’s MCM provides members.
MESSA members can enroll in MCM by calling 800-441-4626. Nurse coordinators are available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to answer questions related to MCM and enrollment.
*Examples of catastrophic injuries include (but are not limited to) head injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, severe burns, multiple fractures, etc.
**Examples of illnesses that often benefit from MCM include (but are not limited to) Cancer, ALS, MS, Huntington’s Disease, Muscular Dystrophy, Ventilator-dependence, Stroke, etc.
